Comfrey, also known as Russian Comfrey / Bocking 14, is a perfect companion to all gardeners because Comfrey is high in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, potash, and calcium. There are so many ways to use Comfrey in an orchard and garden. Comfrey is also known as The Wonder Plant and it stands by its name quite well. Comfrey is dynamic accumulator; the roots have a tap root that grow fast and absorb nutrients and minerals from the soil. The large and nutrient rich leaves grow fast as well, which provides several cuttings per season for a large supply of soil conditioner, mulch, compost, and fertilizer. It can also be fed to animals, some prefer it to be wilted for a day before fed to chickens, cows, horses, pigs and goats.
Comfrey Guild Rings are a beneficial method of fertilizing and aerating the soil around fruit trees. Guild Rings are plants of Comfrey planted under the fruit tree from the drip zone to the trunk of the tree. The tap roots of the Comfrey grow deep down into the soil, while it is absorbing the nutrients, it is also aerating the soil by breaking up the compacted clay. The deep tap roots don’t interfere with the fruit tree roots as they run just below the surface of the soil. When the Comfrey gets tall enough to use the “chop and drop” method, place the leaves around the fruit trees to compost the Comfrey and turn it into a fertilizer. The extra leaves can also be used to make a compost tea as a liquid fertilizer for your garden.
Comfrey flowers attract a variety of pollinators. The flowers provide nectar and pollen to many species of bees and other insects. The pollinators will not only be attracted to the Comfrey, but they will also pollinate the fruit trees as well. Adding Comfrey to your orchard is a great choice of organic gardening.
